Don’t Mess With Texas … Textbooks!
March 19, 2010
by Chuck Norris * 03/16/2010
By now, you most likely know that Texas has become ground zero for the latest battles in the textbook wars. While conservatives and progressives take their stands on the issue, I wonder: What would America’s Founders think about this feud?
For those who somehow have dodged the news, the 15-member Texas State Board of Education, which is composed of 10 Republicans and five Democrats, has been hearing and debating variances of opinion regarding what to include and exclude in its social studies curriculum and subsequent textbooks.
Last Friday, the SBOE members began to wrap up the process by endorsing a draft proposal of the state’s social studies curriculum, with an 11-4 vote.
Not surprising is the full range of progressive issues that liberals want the SBOE to include, from emphasizing equity and tolerance for all minorities to erasing key conservative figures and events from history and whitewashing the Judeo-Christian convictions of our Founders.
Liberals and progressives complain that conservatives are hijacking the curriculum process and modifying textbooks to fit their ideological whims. But the history of textbook alterations clearly has proved it is the liberals who have changed the course and content of curricula and textbook production.

Rep. Sessions: ‘Slaughter Rule’ To Pass Health Care With No Up-Down Vote on Bill is Unconstitutional

Obama’s Cancellation of Indonesia Visit Could Have Implications for U.S. Interests, Trade
(CNSNews.com) – President Obama’s decision to postpone a visit to Australia and – for the third time – to Indonesia comes after a year in which administration officials repeatedly have stressed that the U.S. is “back” in Asia, following a period of disinterest or distraction by Obama’s predecessor. Obama’s decision not to go to Indonesia now could have implications for U.S. companies hoping to benefit from the country’s rapidly growing energy market, an area China also is eyeing eagerly.

The South is rising again
March 19, 2010Peter Heck - 3/15/2010
Yes, the spirit of the South is rising again, but this time it’s different. This time it’s all over the country.
The South is rising again. Before I go any further, let me clarify. Sadly, too many in our country possess the superficial and ignorant perception that the only impetus behind southern secession was to perpetuate the abhorrent practice of slavery. Therefore, when they hear such a phrase, their kneejerk reaction tells them this must be about race. I assure you, it’s not.
When the North invaded the South during the 1860s, it was to deny the southern states the ultimate expression of their sovereignty – the ability to withdraw from a union they had voluntarily joined. Interestingly, secession was a right that the northern New England states had contemplated using themselves in the 1804 Hartford Convention when they felt the national government had become too oppressive.
Nevertheless, Lincoln’s views on government were clearly expressed in his famous “House Divided” speech when he articulated to the south that he would not allow different states to take different sides on different issues. We would, “become all one thing, or all the other.” With all due respect to Mr. Lincoln, this was a radical departure from the Founders’ view of federalism and good government. And as a consequence, things got really ugly.
So what does any of this have to do with our current situation? As it turns out, more than you might think
Daily dose of the detestable
March 19, 2010I was always puzzled at why Doggett’s major campaign contributors were health insurance companies… allowing his net worth to exceed 21 million dollars since his 2005 election to Congress.Doggett’s vote for Obamacare is his vote for self-enrichment. Sleazy b@stard.
And you’re surprised by this…why? We need to do everything possible to help Dr. Donna Campbell retire that elitist, self-serving snollygoster in November.
A ‘yes’ vote on the previous question is a vote to authorize Speaker Pelosi to use the Slaughter Solution to ram ObamaCare through the House without an up-or-down vote. A ‘no’ vote on the PQ [previous question] is a vote against the Slaughter Solution. ”
For the Record
“‘We allow the insurance industry to run wild in this country,’ President Obama declared [last] Monday. ‘We can’t have a system that works better for the insurance companies than it does for the American people.’ Yet Obama’s plan to “tame ” health insurers would boost their business, protect them from competition and guarantee their profits, all at the expense of consumers and taxpayers.
It is therefore not surprising that the insurance companies, while they object to the president’s rhetoric and quibble over some of the details, are happy to be domesticated. … As he himself notes, ‘They’re going to have 30 million new customers,’ thanks to the government’s mandates and subsidies.
To distract us from the favor he is doing for insurers, Obama claims to be getting tough with them by demanding that they take all comers and charge them all the same rates, without regard to health. While abolishing risk-based pricing contradicts a basic principle of the insurance business, the industry has to weigh the loss of that freedom against the gain of government-guaranteed revenue. Despite his talk about reining in ‘excessive’ premium hikes, Obama’s plan commits him to keeping insurers financially sound so they can provide the coverage he is promising. …
In essence, then, Obama’s plan would use money forcibly extracted from taxpayers and policyholders to keep insurers healthy.”

Democrats’ True Colors
March 19, 2010by Michael Gerson * Wednesday, March 17, 2010
WASHINGTON — The final outcome of the health care reform debate is uncertain — who can predict where a writhing eel will land? — but we have learned a few things already.
First, we know that President Obama and the Democratic congressional leadership could not persuade a majority of Americans of the wisdom of their plan — and have largely ceased to try.
…
A second thing we have learned during the health care debate is that the Democratic Party’s commitment to abortion rights is even more central to its identity than health reform.
…
Third, we have learned that the president and congressional leaders are not serious about entitlement reform.
Left attacks Constitution again
March 19, 2010Poor Richard: To the Democrats it still is and always will be about POWER rather than LIBERTY. They have offended and alientated Independents and Reagan Democrats within their own Party. That’s why they’re seeking Immigration “Reform” (Amnesty) and now Felony Voting Law “Reform” (Reinstatement) to FIND NEW VOTERS BEHOLDING TO THE DEMOCRATS BEFORE THE 2010 / 2012 ELECTIONS. Queen Nancy recently told us that passing healthcare “was just the beginning”. She meant it. This was and is another States Rights assault by the far left socialists.

The Right of Felons to Vote: The House Takes On the Constitution
by Hans A. von Spakovsky
Most of you were probably too busy with real work to have watched Roger Clegg and me on the web yesterday as we testified before the House Judiciary Committee. We spoke against a bill that would purport to force all states to restore the right of a felon to vote the moment he is released from prison. It was certainly an illuminating experience. There were five witnesses on the other side versus the two of us, so I guess it was a fair debate. The venom of the attacks on Roger, however, was quite stunning. Rep. Steve Cohen (D., Tenn.) even attacked Roger for the name of the organization he represents, the Center for Equal Opportunity, because he is apparently offended that CEO does not believe in quotas and outright racial discrimination that favors certain racial groups.
It was also a real lesson in how contemptuous liberals are of the Constitution. Roger and I both pointed out that Congress cannot override a constitutional provision through legislation. The Fourteenth Amendment specifically gives the states the power to abridge the right to vote “for participation in rebellion, or other crime.”
The 14th Amendment
Section 2. Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the Executive and Judicial officers of a State, or the members of the Legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such State, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State.
The Slaughter on the Southern Border
March 19, 2010Michelle Malkin * Mar 19, 2010 * FrontPageMag.com
At a joint press conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon last year, President Obama vowed to make ending border violence a “top priority.” How’s that hope and change working out? Drug-related crime is out of control, the State Department is warning spring-break vacationers to avoid the Mexican states of Durango, Coahuila and Chihuahua, and the bloodshed has now reached the U.S. consulate’s office.
A young American consulate worker and her unborn baby were slain this weekend in Mexico, along with her
U.S. detention officer husband and the Mexican husband of another consulate worker. The wanton murders appear to have been a coordinated drug cartel hit; the victims had all just left a children’s birthday party in Juarez and were headed across the border back into Texas. The pregnant American official, Lesley Enriquez, is reportedly the first consulate employee to die in drug-related violence since 1985. Her 7-month-old daughter, terrorized by the gunfire while strapped in her car seat, was the lone survivor of the attack.
The State Department has now authorized the evacuation of dependents of U.S. personnel in six Mexican cities along its northern border with the U.S. And the resort town of Acapulco saw at least 13 murdered over the past week — including four beheadings. The total death toll over the past three years is nearing 20,000.
Mexican government officials have been quite content to blame their neighbors for the outbreaks; to play the race card; to demand blanket amnesty for illegal aliens from their country trying to flee the violence and misery; and to collect massive infusions of U.S. aid that have fallen into the wrong hands.

Brian Russell, a conservative leader
March 19, 2010Donna Garner writes:
As you know, the nation has been watching some wonderful recent victories by a small group of principled, heroic Conservatives on our State Board of Education.
Your help is needed with the crucial, upcoming run-off race for a key State Board of Education seat. One of our strong Conservatives, Cynthia Dunbar of Sugarland, is vacating her seat to teach at Liberty University Law School in Virginia. A devoted Christian speaker and expert on the U.S. Constitution, she has given her full support and endorsement to Brian Russell of Austin.
An attorney, father, pro-life and pro-family patriot, Mr. Russell is by far the best candidate on the Republican ticket in their district. His endorsements include David Barton of Wallbuilders, Matt Staver of Liberty Counsel, the Texas Republican Assembly, and many Tea Party groups in SBOE District 10.
Meet Brian Russell.
In the April 13 run-off election, Brian is opposed by a wealthy, much less conservative Republican woman.
This Saturday, Brian’s campaign will be putting yard signs and flyers in the hands of delegates to county conventions in his large District 10 region (including Katy, Brenham, Ft. Bend, Georgetown, La Grange; Waller & Austin Counties; Brazoria, Burleson, Milam, Colorado, Fayette, & Travis Counties).
The campaign also needs donations for radio ads and mailers to the district’s voters before April 13.

Here’s a great article by Brian Russell, which certainly indicates the breadth and depth of his views on education. Please share this with all of your Conservative Friends so we can get him elected!
State Board of Education: The Imperative of Conservative Leadership
By Brian Russell, SBOE Candidate, Dist. 10
During this 2010 election cycle, voters will select eight of the 15 members of the State Board of Education (SBOE), which sets statewide public education policy for grades K-12. To further the progress made by the seven conservative Republican members currently serving on the SBOE, we must return strong conservative Republican leaders to the SBOE.
There are clear cut differences between the systematic, knowledge-based educational approach consistently championed by the conservative members of the SBOE and the competing liberal approach advocated by the education-political lobby.
For example, Texas 4th grade students ranked 32nd out of the 50 states and District of Columbia in the 2007 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) by the U.S. Department of Education. This mediocre performance was due in part to the crippling of Texas students’ ability to read for many years by the liberal “whole language” approach to reading, rather than the use of phonics.
Thanks to the leadership of conservatives on the SBOE, however, Texas students are now being
systematically instructed in phonics, equipping students with the ability to decode even unfamiliar words and therefore succeed in reading.
In 4th grade mathematics, Texas similarly ranked in the middle of the pack (27th) in the 2007 NAEP.
That same year, the SBOE was on the brink of adopting a so-called “fuzzy math” textbook called “Everyday Math,” which only expected 3rd grade students to learn multiplication tables for the easy numbers of 0, 1, 2, 5 and 10, and use “strategies” (a.k.a. calculators) for the remaining numbers.
Clearly, this type of textbook would do nothing to improve the achievement of Texas students.
Therefore, conservatives on the SBOE again took a courageous stand and rejected this substandard textbook, outraging the education-political lobby and thrilling parents of elementary school students.
During its upcoming term, the SBOE will develop curriculum standards for subjects including math, science, and health. It will adopt instructional materials for subjects including math, science, and American history/social studies.
In each case, conservative leadership that is reflective of Texas’ citizens is needed to ensure adoption of curricula and textbooks that reflect a time-tested, knowledge-based approach.
Texans want the best possible education for their children rather than the liberal, experimental approach favored by the education-political lobby. Time and again, it is the conservatives on the SBOE that deliver.
Brian Russell is a Republican candidate for State Board of Education, District 10, which includes all of Austin, Bastrop, Burleson, Colorado, DeWitt, Fayette, Gonzales, Lavaca, Lee, Milam, Waller, Washington & Williamson counties, as well as portions of Brazoria, Fort Bend & Travis counties.
